The Oracle of Animal Soul Medicine grew slowly, over more than ten years of painting, walking, listening and paying attention.
It began with animals appearing in my artwork alongside my own animistic practice. Over time, the two became inseparable. Painting became another way of listening, and the animals became more than subjects to be represented. Each seemed to arrive with its own character, atmosphere and particular way of looking at the world.
There are 73 animal spirits in the oracle. Some are familiar figures Stag, Wolf and Bear, while others are creatures we might easily overlook: Limpet, Lobster, Goat, Rooster.
I have come to believe that an image does not always need to be explained too quickly.
We have always found meaning through images and symbols. They give us another language, one that can speak to imagination, memory and feeling without requiring everything to be made literal or certain.
Sometimes we can simply stay with an image and notice what begins to move.
An animal may disturb us, delight us, remind us of something forgotten, or reveal something entirely different from what we expected. The same card encountered a year later may have something quite different to say.
For me, this is where the oracle becomes most alive.
The accompanying book offers my own interpretation of each animal, drawn from the experiences and circumstances in which the paintings emerged. Each entry includes keywords, guidance, Soul Medicine which are suggestions for bringing the qualities of the animal into lived experience and a blessing.
But the book is not intended to have the final word.
Your own imagination, intuition and relationship with the image matter too.
My work is an invitation to deepen our experience of being alive.
Perhaps these cards can become part of that: a way of slowing down, paying attention and entering into conversation with the more-than-human world and with those parts of ourselves that ordinary life can sometimes make difficult to hear.
